As part of our annual Festival of Trees - this year “Reimagined”, the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation regretfully announces that the Fireworks scheduled for 5:00 pm this Sunday, December 6th, have been cancelled. The following notification was received early Friday evening from Northern Health.
“Northern Health is not in support of setting off fireworks at the designated time. Regardless of whether it’s intentional or not, this will promote in-person gatherings. As we are in a state of elevated restrictions, we are advocating for each individual, business, and organization to err on the side of caution.”
This comes on the heels of the November 19th orders released by the PHO.
“We tried.” said Selen Alpay, Owner of Canadian Tire and Fireworks Sponsor. “All precautions were in place and noting that there was no designated location, but rather access to view from everyone’s own homes, the committee had come up with a completely safe way for residents to stay distanced and just look up.” In the end even that was prohibited. “I’m disappointed, it’s just one more thing that is cancelled at the 11th hour.” He said.
“Naturally we are frustrated”, said Judy Neiser, CEO for Spirit of the North. “Festival of Trees has long been known to kick off the Holiday Season for many. This year it was a glimmer of hope and enjoyment that could be done safely. We have yet to receive any further explanation. It is what it is at this point.”
Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation through the Festival of Trees is currently raising funds to support the addition of a dedicated molecular diagnostic lab at UHNBC. For more information please see www.festivaloftreespg.ca
