Punjabi Canadian Senior Society’s Helping to Enhance Healthcare in the North with their 6th Annual Bike-A-Thon

Aug 24, 2015

The Punjabi Canadian Senior Society’s 6th Annual Bike-A-Thon will take place on Saturday, September 12th. All of the funds raised will go towards Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation in order to help healthcare in the north.

Starting at 7 am at the Senior Centre, volunteers of all ages will bike their way to Purden Lake where they will be treated with a picnic provided by the Punjabi Canadian Senior Society. The participants will then bike back to their starting point that after noon. Not only does this event provide funds for an amazing cause, but it is always a great way to get out and exercise.

For the sixth consecutive year, all proceeds will be directed to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation to create the best of care, close to home in the North. In the past five years, the Bike-A-Thon has successfully raised almost $40,000.

This year, the funds from this event will be put towards Spirit of the North’s annual Radiothon, as they work their way towards funding the OptosOCT SLO system along with a California UWF unit. Young and old alike will benefit from the comprehensive diagnostic capabilities that this equipment provides. Specializing in measuring and recording the progression of retinal disease and the effects of today’s new and emerging therapies it is needed for many diseases and conditions of the eye.

Some of the most highly effective and crucial areas of use are:

  • macular degeneration
  • glaucoma
  • stroke patients
  • injuries directly to the eye
  • diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal holes, tears and detachments

This new, state of the art equipment will provide diagnostic information that is crucial to make medical decisions regarding patient care and follow up. It has been endorsed by Dr. John Konkal and Dr. Andrew Lukaris and many other Optometrists and eye care professionals.

If you wish to take part in this year’s Bike-A-Thon or donate towards their efforts, please contact either Gurdeep Powar at 250-552-3816, or Major Varaich at 250-552-1123.

Congratulations to the winner of our 2015 Canfor/ Spirit of the North Scholarship, Andrew Schulz.
